People of Ziro

The Apatanis, one of the major ethnic groups of eastern Himalayas, have a distinct civilization with systematic land-use practices and rich traditional ecological knowledge of natural resources management and conservation, acquired over the centuries through informal experimentation. The tribe is known for their colorful culture with various festivals, intricate handloom designs, skills in cane and bamboo crafts, and vibrant traditional village councils called bulyañ. This has made Ziro Valley a good example of a living cultural landscape where man and environment have harmoniously existed together in a state of interdependence even through changing times, such co-existence being nurtured by the traditional customs and spiritual belief systems. The community has evolved a unique skill of rice-fish cultivation where along with paddy, fish is also reared on the fields.

Village Tour:

Hong Village

Hong village is in the middle of the Ziro Valley and this village is a place for an Apatani tribe. It is approximately a half an hour walk from Ziro to Hong Village. In Hong Village, most of the houses have a field that has a small pond and are used for fish farming and frog rearing. Inside the traditional houses in Hong village, they have a fireplace in between and most of the time the family seat around the fireplace and enjoys their meals, roasted fish, etc. In Hong village, we can see most of the women working in fields instead of men. And the women also have lots of tattoos on their faces as it is their tradition. The people of Hong village are one of the few people in the world who continue to live in harmony with nature. Hong Village Community remains proud of its traditional history while maintaining a balance with the changing world. The Village Community even uses the elevated partition bunds between rice plots to grow millets. Using nature-friendly and sustainable techniques alone, they have successfully conserved forests around the valley, which serve as watersheds for streamlets flowing down to irrigate your fields. Their simple bamboo huts perched on top of vertical wooden stilts force us to rethink our consumerist approach towards living.
